"A person could do that while still riding." Claire defended her stand. Let him come up to her face about it and be angry, but he hadn't done much. He might call it maturing, but if that was the case, he'd still be trying to ride. She sighed and said, "But I can see what you mean. You don't want to be known as the same Chasing March anymore." She could admit that someone wouldn't be too pleased with such a stigma. Claire had known him for whom he truly was and he was not like that at all. Still, he wasn't the kind of person to sit back like this. And where had this come from?
"Look, Chasing, you make sense and I understand that, I just want to know what brought this on. You weren't like this before, you changed in ways that makes me wonder if I even know you anymore." Claire shook her head. "I think it's better to think of meeting you for the first time." She started to laugh. She didn't know why, but it just made her laugh. "I'm sorry." She apologized and took a deep breath. "It's a nice gesture, but I like doing things my own way, besides, I'm out there only in a very anonymous way."

"It's been two years of course I've changed, I've gotten serious", he gave her his goofy smile to show he was joking and shrugged. "I don't know. Competing just doesn't feel right, right now. I feel like I'm pushing myself to ride and I don't like that. I've lost my muse for riding. Don't worry though", he gave her his innocent smile. "Adri will come over tonight and help me find it. It's probably hiding out in some stall out in Nowhere, Montana".
"Are you sure? Got a friend coming by next week to look at the place. He's in cotton", he winked at her. In the South, saying someone was in cotton meant they were in business and they were good at it. "He always looks funny on a horse but the man loves to ride. He's not a competitor or anything, sort of a weekender but he's no slouch and the horse he's got", Chasing shook his head. "Man outbid me on that horse six years ago and doesn't do much with him", he pouted mournfully over the loss of such a horse.

Claire laughed, Chasing? Serious? No, that really was a joke. If he was ever truly serious then she was a pink rabbit. But yes, he had said he had lost his riding muse before. It was a loosing battle. "If that's all it took to keep me from riding, then I pray it doesn't. Though, if you want a challenge, I could bring down a few horses from the farm that are retired and in training. I tell you, a Standardbred is a different kind of horse, plain in color but high in spirit." Claire gave him the talk she had given other trainers who now worked for her, the kind that made skeptics believers.
"But, no, thank you all the same. I really do like to do things my own way." Claire told him with absolute confidence. The few replies she had gotten from the ad hadn't yielded too much as of yet, but she was holding to hope. At least she was getting replies and it was only day 4 of it being in print. "Shame then, he'd need someone to show him how to really do it, then. Too bad you're not competing anymore."

He really laughed at that. "No thank you. You know full well I don't like anything that was ever on a racetrack", he told her. Especially trotters, something about them just rubbed him the wrong way. Put them up there with paints, dapples and irish horses was his philosophy. "They always pull to the left and they think the jump is the inside rail", he teased her as he piled dishes into the sink with clinks of silverware and plates.
"No Jamie isn't the competitive type", Chasing replied, "Well except in business. He has two brothers who are competitive riders, one's a steeplechaser the other an eventer, but the competitive spirit never took hold in him. He likes to ride though and since he's moving to Atlanta he's boarding his horse here. Maybe I can finally wheedle Shrek away from him".

"We've some that never saw a track, let alone a harness." She tried, not the kind to give up right away. Not when she had a good reason to hold to it. Though the odds of getting Chasing to ride her kind of horse was terrible. "And I know how much you like interesting horses that look plain." Which was a Standardbred to a 't'.
"Good luck." Claire said, almost mockingly. "If it's a good horse, I doubt a smart man would let him go." She shook her head and checked her watch. "I really should get going now. I've got an appointment waiting for me in fifteen minutes down in the barn." Meaning there was a horse out there that needed working since she had not yet been given a schedule.

"Interesting and plain? Describes me to a 'T'", he shrugged, starting to scrub dishes. "I couldn't afford him now, but I can now", Chasing told her, "That makes all the difference". He turned to face her, dripping plate in his hands, "Alright. Like I said I should have a schedule for you in the morning. I'll make some calls, arrange some lessons for you", he told her, waving a soapy hand at her in farewell.
